When an emergency situation is encountered in the workplace, having thorough and tested response procedures in place is essential to minimising harm, and ensuring the best possible outcome. Emergency planning and preparation is not only important to ensure the safety of all workers and other visitors to the workplace, it is in many cases a legal requirement.

This course is designed to support and enhance the safety of your workplace and its people by providing information and training about your organisation’s various roles and responsibilities in preparing for, and responding to, emergencies.

What the course covers

The Essentials of Emergency Preparedness course covers the following major subject areas:

• Introduction to emergency planning concepts
• Organisational roles and responsibilities
• The importance of an Emergency Plan
• What the Emergency Plan should contain
• What are emergency response procedures?
• Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans
• Emergency response exercises (drills)
• Emergency preparation as an ongoing process
• Understanding fire and smoke emergencies
• How to respond in the event of an emergency
• How to use emergency response equipment
• Preparing for lockdown emergencies.

Course structure and delivery

This course is delivered as an online self-paced training module. The module consists of 33 screens of content followed by an assessment of randomised questions. Participants must answer all questions correctly in order to complete the course, and may review content and re-attempt the assessment until it has been passed. Most people will complete the course in 35 to 40 minutes. After completion, a personalised certificate can be printed.
